Older people in Wales urged to get photo ID so they can continue voting in future elections

Published on 20 March 2023 04:23 PM

Age Cymru is urging older people in Wales to make sure they have suitable photo ID so they can continue voting in polling stations and maintain their strong voice at all levels of government in Wales and the UK.

From 4 May 2023 everyone will be required to show photo ID to vote at polling stations in elections for police and crime commissioners, and any UK parliamentary by-elections.  And from 1 October 2023 the ruling will also apply to UK general elections.

The list of documents that can be used for ID is quite extensive and includes your passport, driving licence, an older person's bus pass, blue badge, and the 60 and over Welsh Concessionary Travel Card. But please remember you need to present the original ID and not a photocopy.

If you don’t have any suitable photo ID, or you no longer look like your attached photograph, then you need to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate.

Applying for a Voter Authority Certificate

When you register to vote with your local authority, you’ll be asked if you have suitable photo ID or whether you need to apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate.

You may apply for the certificate by visiting https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate. Paper application forms are also available from your local authority. Both application processes are available in Welsh and English.

Applicants must be registered to vote and will also need to provide their date of birth, National Insurance number and a photograph with their application. The deadline to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate will be 5pm six working days before the date of the election. If you need any further information, contact your local Electoral Registration Office.

Further information about Age Cymru’s work is available by visiting www.agecymru.org.uk or calling 029 2043 1555.
