Age Cymru brings its arts exhibition space The Cube to Barry Hospital

Published on 19 June 2023 11:00 PM

Age Cymru is bringing its arts exhibition space The Cube to Barry Hospital. The Cube has been used by the charity for several years to showcase arts and creativity created by and inspired by older people, particularly those living in residential care homes.

It’s also been used in other hospital settings to create a sense of calmness and well-being for patients and visitors. The Cube has provided an opportunity to help raise public awareness of the creativity of people living in, working in and visiting Wales care homes, and has featured the art work of Penny Alexander, Emma Prentice, Tara Dean, Alice Briggs and Lizzy Stonhold amongst others.

The installation is the start of a three-year partnership between Age Cymru and the Cardiff and Vale Health Charity to help promote the arts and health work of the health board. To kick off the partnership, The Cube will feature Nathan Wyburn’s impactful pieces for This is Older, a project that seeks to depict the over 50’s as a diverse range of people that can be active, less mobile, sociable, isolated, happy, sad, well off, living in poverty and everything in between!

Co-ordinating the project, Age Cymru’s Kelly Barr says “Wherever the Cube has travelled it has created a sense of wonderment and sparked conversations about creativity in older age. We’re really pleased to be handing The Cube over to the Cardiff and Vale Health Charity, who we have worked with for a number of years through our Gwanwyn Festival. We’re excited to see future exhibitions in Cardiff and the Vale, and hope that people visiting Barry Hospital enjoy this thought-provoking exhibition!”

Simone Joslyn, Head of Arts at Cardiff and Vale Health Board and Cardiff & Vale Health Charity said: “The cube is a fantastic addition to Barry Hospital and allows for showcasing artists' work in a fresh, unique way. Patients, staff, volunteers and visitors will have a chance to admire art not only on the hospital's walls but also outside the building. Transforming hospitals into more vibrant and inspiring spaces is an element of our mission, so we are incredibly grateful to Age Cymru for donating the cube and helping us to deliver our improved patient and staff experience.”
