As Derek's world got smaller, befriending services brought a new dimension to his life

Derek lives with Parkinson's disease, and over time he's become less mobile. He felt like his world was shrinking, but Age UK East London introduced him to Kate, a befriending volunteer who shares many of his interests. Her visits have helped Derek broaden his horizons.

Kate helps Derek to make the most of his computer, allowing him to learn and experience new things, in spite of the difficulty he has in getting out and about. Alongside this, both Kate and Derek are keen Russian speakers and Kate's visits give him the opportunity to brush up on his language skills.

Derek and Kate have developed a real and rewarding friendship. Derek says: "Kate's visits are a refreshing experience where, for a time, my Parkinson's becomes secondary. She has brought a new dimension to my life."
